Abstract Neurodegenerative disorders are caused by the progressive death of nerve cells in different regions of the nervous system. The progressive loss of neurons is what gives rise to the neurological and neurophysiological symptoms and signs characteristic of each of these diseases (Myers & Chakraborty, 2011). With the aging of the population, the incidence of neurodegeneration is increasing dramatically in the absence of either effective therapeutic interventions or a clear understanding of the discrete pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disease states (Bozyczko-Coyne & Williams, 2007). Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of neurodegenerative disorders and it defined as a chronic autoimmune disease. It is a demyelinating disease that affects the white matter which covers the axons. The causes of MS are still unknown, although it is believed to be caused by a virus or an antigen that triggers immunological abnormalities that cause the body to attack its own myelin, however there are also environmental factors that are involved in the development of the disease (Levin et al., 2014). |
