Abstract

Summary
This study, entitled ”Translation of the Augmented Arabic Verbs in the Holy Qur’an: A Qualitative Analytical Study” is a morphological semantic pragmatic study that investigates the problems of translating the augmented verbs in the holy Qur’an into English and attempts to propose some viable solutions to solve those problems. It also attempts to find out the best methods and strategies for translating those verbs through the analysis and assessment of six translations of the augmented verbs in the glorious Qur’an.
The analysis and assessment of the translations employ a linguistic qualitative methodology consisting in analysis, comparison and inference. The success of the translations is judged on the basis of the level of achievement of accuracy, intelligibility and impact.
It is supposed that the translation of the augmented verbs poses a real challenge to translators, because the most of these verbs do not exist in English Language. On the other hand, according to Arab linguists and morphologists ”An Augmentation in Structure Entails an Increase in Meaning” (الزيادة في المبنى زيادة في المعنى). Accordingly, the augmented verbs are those verbs that have additive letters on the root to express additive meaning. However, linguists and scholars did not identify all the meanings of the augmentation forms and disagreed about some other meanings. The problem appears in the inability of many translators to identify the proper meanings of the augmented verbs, thereupon they often fail to produce adequate equivalence to the augmented verbs, and accordingly give inadequate translation.
The study aims to achieve some objectives among which:
1. Analyzing and assessing the translations of the augmented verbs in the glorious Qur’an into English for the sake of finding out semantic and grammatical differences between SL and TL.
2. Investigating the problems of rendering the augmented verbs in the glorious Qur’an and suggesting practical solutions to overcome those problems.
3. Exploring to what extent the translators could achieve accuracy and intelligibility in translation.
4. Suggesting more accurate and intelligible translations for the inaccurate and unintelligible translations of some augmented verbs in the TTs.
The study is significant as it proposes some solutions for the problems of translating the augmented verbs in the holy Qur’an based on the meanings of the augmented forms the current study has identified. The study is equally significant in contributing and assisting in the existing efforts aiming at improving the translation of the Qur’anic text through casting more light on the translation of the augmented verbs in the holy Qur’an. Finally, it is hoped that the present study will help reduce the linguistic problems of translation resulting from differences between the SL and TL.
The study is limited to the investigation of translation of the augmented verbs in six translations of the holy Qur’an from Arabic into English. The data of the study consists of (42) augmented verbs representing ten types of the augmented forms included in the glorious Qur’an; these forms are:
(فَعَّلَ، أفعَلَ، فَاعَلَ، تَفَعَّلَ، تَفَاعَلَ، اِفتَعَلَ، اِنفَعَلَ، اِفعَلَّ، اِستَفعَلَ، اِفعَلَلَّ)
The study comprises six chapters organized as follows:
Chapter one: Introduction; Chapter two: Methodology of the study; Chapter three: Review of the Related Literature; Chapter Four: Arabic Morphology; Chapter Five: Data Analysis and Evaluation; Chapter Six: Findings and conclusion:
Finally, the study concludes with some findings as follows:
- the study has revealed the importance and gravity of the meanings of augmentation forms for translators and students of translation.
- augmented verbs should be rendered in a different way from unaugmented verbs because they have additive meaning.
- though proficient and well-experienced, the translators faced big difficulties when translarting augmented verbs in holy Qur’an resulting in committing serious mistakes that cause deviation and sometimes meaning loss.
- there are six successful strategies in translating augmented verbs: 1) whenever there is homogeneity on the linguistic level of both SL and TL then word-for-word translation is straightforward; 2) to translate by using verb + object; 3) by using phrasal verb + verb; 4) by using verb + adverb; 5) by using linking verb + adjective; 6) by using collocation or idiom.
