Abstract Postpartum period refers to the first 6-8 postnatal weeks. It is a period when great changes take place in women’s physical , social and psychological setup. These changes pose a challenge to the postnatal woman in various ways. She is usually burdened by several physical discomforts one of which is episiotomy. Episiotomy is the most frequently performed operative procedure during childbirth to facilitate delivery and to prevent perineal and rectal trauma. Loss of perineal integrity due to performing such procedure may cause perineal pain and discomfort which may negatively influence the physical and psychological function of puerperal women. The utilization of CATs for the relief of perineal pain and enhancement of episiotomy healing can be initiated by nurses, midwives or obstetricians. These therapies increase the parturient’s coping and satisfaction as well as lowering costs. Among these therapeutic approaches is the use of essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being. One of the widely used essential oils is lavender oil. It is traditionally believed to have sedative, anti-depressive and anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to its recognized antimicrobial effects. Aim of the study The present study aimed to determine the effect of lavender oil drops application on perineal pain intensity and episiotomy wound healing among primiparous women. Research hypotheses: - Primiparous women who apply lavender oil drops exhibit less perineal pain intensity than those who use routine hospital episiotomy care. - Primiparous women who apply lavender oil drops exhibit more positive signs of episiotomy wound healing than those who use routine hospital episiotomy care. Materials and method Setting: The study was conducted at the post natal unit of El-Shatby Maternity University Hospital in Alexandria governorate. Subjects: The study subjects were selected by using the non- probability sampling technique where a convenient sample of 80 primiparous women was recruited from the previously mentioned setting according to Epi-info statistical program. The subjects were selected according to the following inclusion criteria: At the first 4-6 hours after delivery. Had a normal vaginal delivery with episiotomy. Complaining of perineal discomfort (pain). Had viable healthy baby. Do not use any pain relieving drug.. |
