Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of Care Stream CS3700 digital intraoral scanner and Vita EasyShade spectrophotometer in tooth color determination. The accuracy of the intraoral scanner was evaluated by calculating the percent agreement of shade values (Qualitative Data) between shade values obtained by both instruments. Percent agreement between color coordinates (quantitative Data) was also calculated.
A total of 20 participants were recruited in this study that satisfy the eligibility criteria (intact, vital, well aligned maxillary central and lateral incisors), with no previous bleaching or orthodontic treatments. The participants had undergone a dental prophylactic phase which involved polishing of the teeth to remove any stains prior to shade selection procedure to avoid any possible errors. The shade of each participant’s maxillary central and lateral incisors were measured by both instruments. For the repeatability assessment, one month left between the first and the second visit. A transparent acrylic resin used to position the spectrophotometer in the same exact location on the tooth surface for the repeatability assessment.
The outcome of this study suggests that the accuracy of Carestream CS3700 digital intraoral scanner was considered fair to poor in tooth color determination when compared to a reference spectrophotometer. Both instruments showed good repeatability.
