Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin, or when the body is unable to effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that controls the level of sugar in the blood. Hyperglycemia, also known as high blood sugar level, is a common result of an imbalance in blood sugar control, and over time leads to serious damage to many body systems, especially nerves and blood vessels. The aim of this review is to perform an update on the benefits and limitations of different drugs, both current and future, for the treatment of T2DM. The first intervention should focus on lifestyle changes. In addition, lifestyle changes have been shown to be beneficial, but for many patients, is a long-term complication. Physicians should be familiar with the existing drugs used to treat diabetes and choose the most effective and safe, and the one that the patient can tolerate most. Metformin continues to be the first-line therapy for most patients. Other alternative treatment options or second line treatment options should be selected individually according to the characteristics of each patient. This article focuses on the drugs introduced within over the last decade and provides an overview of the treatments available to patients with T2DM.
