Abstract

Increasing blood pressure above 120/80 mmHg level refers to a health problem that should be treated. A clinic blood pressure reading between 120/80 mmHg and 140/90 mmHg is defined as high-normal blood pressure, while the blood pressure level above 140/90 refers to a high blood pressure which is commonly as hypertension according to The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Many epidemiological studies have reported that the increasing prevalence of hypertension is mainly due to population growth, ageing, and behavioral risk factors, such as unhealthy diet, excessive use of alcohol, lack of physical activity, excess weight, and exposure to persistent stress. The reduction of hypertension could be accomplished through lifestyle and dietary changes. Lifestyle changes include smoking cessation, reducing sodium intake, limiting alcohol consumption, and exercising regularly. If the lifestyle and dietary changes don’t reduce the lower pressure or at least the high-normal range, a drug treatment should be offered. There are various synthetic drugs that were used for hypertension treatment. However, these synthetic drugs had many disadvantages such as side effects. In the present study, we focused on plants as a source of therapeutic agents against hypertension.
