Abstract

The study area lies on the Limestone Plateau west of Assiut city in Upper Egypt. New communities and projects are being developed in the region, requiring geological and geophysical investigations to assess subsurface conditions.
This study discusses the environmental and engineering applications of remote sensing techniques and geophysical methods in the study area located around Assuit city. The study area was identified between longitudes 31°5’30” and 31°4’50” east, and latitudes 27° 5’20” and 27° 2’40” north. The study area is located 12 km southwest of Asyut city and 9 km east of Assuit airport. It is close to Assuit Industrial Zone and Assuit Cement Factory.
The study applies remote sensing to study drainage system distribution and its affect on the area ,in addition to the geology field work of the area and collect some rock samples for laboratory study to determine some characteristics (such as rock type - hardness - etc.). Electrical resistivity imaging and ground penetrating radar methods were used to study layer distribution and subsurface voids after processing and interpretation the collected data using RES2dINV and Reflex software’s.
