Abstract

Multidrug resistance is now emerging worldwide at an alarming rate among gram negatives causing both community acquired and nosocomial infections, the most important emerging resistance traits are those reported enterobacteriaceae are dominated by the clavuranic acid - inhibited Ý - lactamases (ESBLs) and the carbapenaemases which hydrolyze most of Ý - lactams including the carbapenems. Detection of infected patients rely on classical identification of infecting agents and susceptibility testing. Two biochemical tests, The ESBL NDP and the carba NP tests have been recently developed for the early detection of ESBL or carbapenemase associated resistance traits. In this study we evaluated the carba NP test for the detection of carbapenemase producing enterobacteriaceae (CPE), and ESBL NDP test for detection of (ESBL) producing gram negative bacilli directly from blood. Our study was conducted on 100 positive blood cultures of identified gram negative strains, and the results of the carba NP and ESBL NDP tests were compared with the ordinary methods as disc diffusion and combination disc methods
