Abstract

We aimed to determine the precipitating factors for breakthrough seizures in epileptic patients attending epilepsy clinic at Kasr Alainy hospital. Thiscross sectional study included 90 epileptic patients. They were divided into two groups. The study group included 55 epileptic patients with idiopathic epilepsy with history of recent breakthrough seizures. The control group included 35 controlled epileptic patients who did not experience any recent breakthrough seizures. Patients with breakthrough seizures were submitted to a thorough questionnaire addressing precipitating factors. All subjects underwent routine labs, electroencephalogram (EEG) and the morisky medication adherence scale. Missed doses (56.4%) was the most frequent reported precipitating factor followed by sleep deprivation (36.4%) then psychological stress (34.5%). The study group was found to have less duration of seizure control, less adherence to AEDs and were more frequently on antiepileptic drugs polytherapy
