Abstract

Snakebites represent a serious public health problem in many areas of the world and are common medical emergency in tropical regions causing multisystemic disorders. Snake antivenom is created by injecting a small amount of the targeted venom into an animal, the subject animal will produce antibodies (Fab’)₂ against the venom’s active molecule which can then be harvested from the animal’s blood and used to treat envenomation. Endotoxin contamination is a serious threat to the safety of parenteral drugs. It is necessary to determine and control the contaminated endotoxin levels in antivenom injections as a quality - control measure. The study aimed at the development and validation of therapeutic antisera depyrogenation strategy which was achieved through carrying out an effective environmental monitoring program using selective culture medium followed by identification of contaminant (s), depyrogenation of pyrogenic antisera by various techniques ultrafiltration, ion - exchange and affinity chromatography and assessing their purity
