Abstract

Eustachian tube dysfunction can be divided into dilatory and patulous types. Dilatory dysfunction can be either obstructive (mainly mucosal inflammation or mass lesion) or dynamic (muscular). In this study, we examined the eustachian tubes of 51 subjects: (25 patients, and 26 controls) using video endoscopy of the nasopharyngeal orifice. A scoring system was utilized to score the tubal opening, mucosal inflammation and muscular movement. There was a significant difference in the mucosal inflammation score in the case group but no significant difference in the muscular movement. This provides evidence that mucosal inflammation remains the main cause of dysfunction even without nasal symptoms or after it{u2019}s apparent medical control
