Abstract

In this thesis, the researcher aimed to formulate ocular sustained drug delivery systems of levofloxacin hemihydrate that combined controlling the release of the drug and decreasing the need to recurrent application thus increasing the patient compliance. In order to achieve this goal, the work in this research was divided into three chapters Chapter I: Formulation and In Vitro Evaluation of levofloxacin hemihydrate in situ gels. Chapter II: Formulation and In Vitro Evaluation of levofloxacin hemihydrate hemi-sponges. Chapter III: Microbiological susceptibility and eye irritation tests of different levofloxacin hemihydrate formulae. from these chapters, we were able to prepare and test two different sustained release ocular dosage forms (in situ gels containing our freshly prepared disappearing preservative and hemi-sponges) that can be applied twice daily instead of 8 times daily in Egyptian market used eye drops. Our prepared formulae proved to be safer (using lower number of doses), cheaper, having prolonged release for 12 hrs and they would be expected to have higher levels of patient compliance making them a promising candidate for topically applied antimicrobials for eye infections
