Abstract

Irradiation of tissues during the course of therapeutic radiation can result in a range of side effects. Arguably the small intestine is the organ of the gastrointestinal mucosa that is most susceptible to damage during a course of radiotherapy. We investigated the effect of ionizing radiation on the integrity and functions of the small intestine. Some natural agents such as; STW 5 (marketed as Iberogast, Steigerwald Arzneimittelwerk GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany) and aqueous propolis extract (Propharma, Havdrup, Denmark), were tested for their efficacy in protection against intestinal mucositis induced in irradiated rats. Materials and methods: Intestinal mucositis was induced in rats by irradiation at different acute levels of 4, 6 and 8Gy. STW 5 (2.5, 5 and 10 ml/kg) or aqueous propolis extract (450, 650 and 850 mg/kg) were delivered orally for 5 days before irradiation and 2 days after. Rats were sacrificed, jejunum segments were exposed to semi-quantitative histological examination to determine the overall damage severity (ODS) score
