Abstract

The purpose of this in vitro study is to compare the microbial leakage through the abutment implant interface of two different types of implant abutment connections using bacterial culture method. Twenty implants were used in this study and they were divided into two groups. group A: 10 implants with internal hexagon connection and matching abutments and group B: 10 implants with external hexagon connection and matching abutments. A pure culture of S. aureus was used as the test bacteria. For groups A and B the abutments were connected to their implants then submerged in tubes containing sterile brain heart infusion (BHI) broth for 30 seconds to determine whether there was any external contamination. After that the assemblies were then completely immersed in 4 mL of S. aureus culture and were incubated at 37{u00B0} C for 14 days. After incubation, the specimens were disassembled, and the inner surface of the implants were sampled using sterile paper points for detection of bacterial contamination. Samples were streaked on blood agar plates and incubated at 37{u00B0} C for 24 hours. Statistical analysis of the results was performed. Microbial leakage occurred in both groups and there was statistically significant difference between them
