Abstract

Dental caries is a major cause for tooth loss, and the need for a treatment modality that preserves the tooth structure with eradication of caries still remains a great aim. The aim of the present work was to study and analyze the effect of Co2 laser, ozone and their combination on the progression of induced carious lesions in experimental rats. This study was conducted on 24 male albino rats that were kept on a cariogenic diet for 6 months. After 4 months, the rats received different management modalities on the 6 mandibular molars. They were divided into 4 groups (6 rats each), a control group, a lased group (received Co2 laser), an ozonized group (received ozonized water and ozone gas) and a combined group (received Co2 laser, ozonized water and ozone gas). Two months later, the rats were sacrificed, dissected and their mandibular molars were examined. The effects of the proposed management modalities were assessed using stereomicroscopic images, back scattered and environmental scanning electron microscopes in addition to histopathological ground sections. Evaluation using the International caries detection and assessment system was accomplished on stereomicroscopic images and was further submitted for statistical analysis
