Abstract

The present investigation was conducted to evaluate clinically and radiographically the effect of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and Zinc on chronic periodontitis patients. The study was performed on twenty four male medically free patients having chronic periodontitis. Radiographic bone density evaluation as well as clinical parameters was recorded after the initial phase of plaque control. The clinical parameters which included; plaque index, gingival index, probing depth and clinical attachment loss and bone density were recorded at baseline, three and six months. The patients were divided into 4 main groups, first group received vitamin C, second group received Zinc, third group received a combination of both (Vitamin C and Zinc) and finally the control group who received no medication. Initial pre-medication traditional periodontal therapy was performed to all groups. The patients were instructed to perform oral hygiene measures by using soft tooth brush and interdentally cleansing devices. The statistical analysis of the collected data revealed an overall clinical improvement by time, except for the PPD Index, for the three medication groups in comparison to the control group. Furthermore, this clinical enhancement was accompanied with an increase in bone density for the three groups. This clinical and radiographic improvement of periodontal and bone status following medication was insignificant
