Abstract

Ocimum basilicum L. (Basil), belongs to the family lamiaceae, is one of the most important aromatic and medicinal species grown in Egypt as a source of volatile oil. However, little information about its botanical and phytochemical characteristics are available. At the same time, increasing productivity of Basil plant from fresh herb and essential oil per unit area is highly recommended to meet the demand of human needs and exportation. Therefore, the present investigations were carried out in the agricultural experiments and researches station, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt, during the two successive growing seasons of 2011 and 2012 in order to introduce a phytography study including morphology and anatomy of vegetative and reproductive growth throughout the consecutive stages of entire life span of basil plant in addition to the analysis of volatile oil of basil herb at full blooming stage and analysis of fixed oil of basil seeds at harvest. Moreover, the investigations involved also studies pertaining to the effect of foliar spray with yeast extract (as rich source of phytohormones) on morphological, anatomical and productivity of Ocimum basilicum L.
