المستخلص

The present study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of using a suggested EFL program based on extensive reading in developing some critical thinking skills and habits of mind for secondary school students. The researcher divided 90 first year secondary school students, the sample of the study, into a control and an experimental group. The experimental group students were instructed according to the interactive teaching techniques used in teaching the extensive reading program designed by the researcher for developing both critical thinking skills and habits of mind throughout the first semester of the school year, 2021/2022. This extensive reading program prepared by the researcher was the study material. The participants of the experimental group were provided with a lot of reading materials. At every lesson, they were free to select any reading material they found easy and interesting. Interactive teaching techniques like full-class interaction and guided group discussion were used beside doing a lot of extensive reading activities. The students of the control group were taught according to the regular method of the textbook. Instruments of the study included a pre-post critical thinking skills test, and a habits of mind scale which were given to both experimental and control groups. Analysis of data using t-test revealed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group on the posttest of the critical thinking skills and the habits of mind scale. The findings proved that the extensive reading program and the interactive teaching techniques used in teaching it could positively affect the improvement of students’ both critical thinking skills and habits of mind.
