Abstract

Railway system has been continuously developed to comply with future traffic requirements, the present thesis deals with one of the most important parts of this system which is “the track”. One of that development is applying the ballastless track instead of the traditional ballast track which needs periodical maintenance during short times, the thesis describes the track structure, components, and construction of ballastless track and compares it to ballast track, highlighting each’s benefits and drawbacks.
Due to numerous parameters and characteristics of ballastless track systems whose can be summarized as two major types according to track rail support discrete or continuous support, it’s necessary to accurately determine the most suitable system according to the different operating conditions, so this thesis aims to study the differences between different ballastless types according to flexural Stiffness, speed of the trains that the track can support, noise, construction rate, construction cost, and renewal assessment.
The thesis concluded that embedded continuous rail system is considered the highest rated system compared to the rest of the systems, followed by the monolithic system, but the accurate decision to choose the best suitable ballastless system is according to the specific operating condition for each case separately.
