Abstract

Background: Nursing activities was associated with high occupational stress and faulty carrying habits that may lead to postural abnormalities and spinal complains. The objective of the current study was to assess Gluteal muscles activation and strength in Egyptian nurses working at different hospital sections specially in the ICU and In-patient units complaining from chronic low back pain. Design: A cross-sectional study. Subjects One hundred thirty-four female and male nurses were recruited for the current study. Their working duration ranged from 3 to 10 years at the hospital, their shifts must include patient`s handling for approximately 8 - 12 hours, and their age ranged from 21 to 40 years old. Methods: The Gluteal muscles activation were assessed by Electromyography and Gluteal muscles strength were assessed by hand-held dynamometer. Results: MANOVA demonstrated that there were no significant differences between groups in all outcomes related to muscle strength. On the other hand, there was only a significant difference between groups in Gluteus Maximus Muscle activation in non-dominant side (F = 16.639, p <.001*) and Gluteus Medius/Minimus Muscle activation in dominant side (F = 6.732, p = 0.011*). Conclusion: The study documented changes in the activation patterns of the Gluteal muscles at dominant and non-dominant sides which may be due to the nature of the nursing work in different departments of the hospital. That working tasks may be suggested to be a risk factor for the development of low back pain later in life.
