Abstract

The main aim of this thesis is to study numerically the supercontinuum generation in SC
– 5.0 – 1040TM, a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Supercontinuum is said
to have formed when numerous nonlinear phenomena such as self-phase modulation,
cross-phase modulation, four-wave mixing, stimulated Raman scattering, and others
contribute to extreme spectrum widening of ultrashort optical pulses. First, the
calculations of higher order dispersion coefficients for SC – 5.0 – 1040TM photonic
crystal fiber are presented. The dispersion coefficient is obtained from the dispersion
curve by curve fitting. Then supercontinuum generation obtained in SC – 5.0 – 1040TM
photonic crystal fiber in the anomalous dispersion regime. Supercontinuum is highly
desirable for purposes of spectroscopy, food quality control, pulse compression, gas
sensing and various nonlinear applications. The effects on supercontinuum spectra by
varying peak power, pulse duration are studied.
