Abstract

Eye infection is a condition that occurs when bacteria, fungi, parasites, or viruses infect the eye. It is a common infection, especially among children younger than 5 years. Aim: of the present study was to determine the effect of educational program regarding eye infection care on mothers’ performance and their children outcomes. Research design: A quasi-experimental research design was used. Setting: The study was conducted at Outpatient clinic at ophthalmology of Tanta city, and, Outpatient pediatric clinic at ophthalmic units of Zifta Ophthalmic Hospital .Subjects: A convenience sampling of 80 mothers having children with eye infection who attended the previously mentioned setting. Three tools were used to collect the required data: Constructed interview questionnaire sheet: to assess mothers’ knowledge towards care of their children suffering from eye infections. It consisted of three parts: Sociodemographic characteristics of mothers, Children, and mothers’ knowledge regarding eye infections. Self-re port mothe rs ’ practice s sheet: to assess mothers’ practices related to eye infection care. Observational chick list to assess Outcomes of children. Result: revealed that there were highly statistically significant differences between the pretest and post-test of educational program implementation regarding eye infection. Conclusion: the present study was revealed that mothers had poor knowledge and inadequate practices related to eye infection and its management. Subsequently, they did not follow the correct instructions related to treatment. There was a positive effect of the educational program on improving the knowledge and practice of the studied mothers regarding eye infection. Recommendations: continuation of educational programs for mothers about management and prevention of eye infection should be held at all ophthalmic hospitals in Elgharbia governorate.
