Abstract

Emotional intelligence helps patients with schizophrenia understand and manage their emotions and the emotions of others, build stronger relationships with family and peers, and achieve career and personal goals. It can also help patients with schizophrenia make informed decisions about what matters most. In addition, it helps the patient control emotions such as stress, anger, sadness, and fear that result from afeeling of loneliness. So emotional intelligence can strongly affect quality of life among patients with schizophrenia, as patients with schizophrenia have impairments in their emotional intelligence and quality of life. This may be caused by hallucinations,delusions resulting from disorganised thinking, and a lack of motivation for daily activities, as disorders often lead to the isolation of patients from society, low income,little education, and poor vocational and social skills.Aim of the study The present study was carried out to explore the relation between emotional intelligence and quality of life among patients with schizophrenia.Research Question:1. What are the levels of emotional intelligence among patients with schizophrenia?2. What are the levels of quality of life among patients with schizophrenia?3. What is the relation between emotional intelligence and quality of life among patients with schizophrenia?Research design:-The descriptive correlational design was utilized to achieve the aim of the study.Research setting: -This study was conducted in Shebin Elkom psychiatric hospital (Meet khalaf psychiatric hospital) and Banha psychiatric hospital.Subjects:A convenience sample of 120 patients who fulfilled following criteria:-1. The patients ranged in age from 18 to 55.2. Patients with distinct kinds of schizophrenia.3. Both genders.Data Collection Instruments:-Three Instruments were used for data collection.1) A Structured Socio-demographic Questionnaire:The questionnaire was developed by the researcher to assess socio demographic characteristics of the subjects.2) instrument (2) Bar-On Emotional Intelligence(EI) quotient-Inventory:The inventory was developed by Bar-on (2000).Translated and modified by Emaraa et al., (2017). It is used to measure emotional intelligence of patients with schizophrenia.3) quality of life scale:This scale was originally developed by WHO organization, (1996), translated into Arabic by Ibrahim, et al., (2021). It used to assess quality of life among patients with schizophrenia.The main findings of the study revealed the following:• The mean age of the studied patients with schizophrenia was 27.8± 5.2 years .• The vast majority of the studied patients (91.7%) with schizophrenia had low level of emotional intelligence followed by (8.3%) had moderate level of emotional intelligence.• About (83.3%) of the studied patients with schizophrenia had bad quality of life followed by (16.7%) had average quality of life.• Approximately (83.5%) of patients with schizophrenia who had low level of emotional intelligence had bad quality of life.• Approximately (82.4%) of patients with schizophrenia who had moderate level of emotional intelligence had bad quality of life.• Approximately (88%) of male patients with schizophrenia had low level of emotional intelligence.• About (74.6%) of patients with low level of emotional intelligence was illiterate.• About (84%) of male patients with schizophrenia had bad quality of life.• About (65.7%) of patients with bad quality of life was illiterate.• There was a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and quality of life among patients with schizophrenia• There was a positive significant correlation between total emotional intelligence score and total quality of life score except in stress management skills subscale of emotional intelligence Based on the findings of the current study, it can be concluded that:• There was a positive significant correlation between emotional intelligence and quality of life among patients with schizophrenia.Based on the findings of the present study, the following recommendations are suggested:1- Establish comprehensive intervention programs to improve the emotional intellegience and quality of life among patients with schizophrenia.2- Establish an educational program for psychiatric nurses to teach them how to improve emotional intelligence and quality of life among patients with schizophrenia.3- Increasing the community awareness about the needs and problems of psychiatric patients especially patients with schizophrenia, how to adjust with it and to make an appropriate referral and the available community mental health services.4- Emphasizing on the need to focus on improving the environment and support systems for patients with schizophrenia.In further research:1. Replication of the study using a larger sample in different correctional settings for further confirmation and generalizability of the results.
