Abstract

HCC is a characteristically hypervascular tumor. Indeed, in order to meet the increased oxygen and nutrient consumption of this fast -growing tumor, the formation of new blood vessels is essential, In neovascularization, endothelial cells of pre-existing vessels proliferate and migrate to form vascular sprouts. Hepatic tumorigenesis is a multistep complicated process characterized by uncontrolled cellular proliferation and increased angiogenesis to enhance tumor growth. There is evidence that angiogenesis plays a vital role in the development and progression of HCC. Many factors have been reported to be involved in this complicated process such as the ANG-TIE system which includes two major mediators ANG-1 and ANG-2 is anew, important family for the regulation of angiogenesis and vascular integrity Angiopoietin 2 is a type of endothelial cell -specific growth factor that plays a significant role in the maturation, stabilization, and remodeling of blood vessels, Angiopoietin 2 belongs to the angiopoietin /tyrosine kinase (Tie) signaling pathway, which induces angiogenesis through antagonism of the Tie2 receptors. The present study aimed to evaluate clinical significance of serum Angiopoietin 2 in HCC Patients. Angiopoietin 2 was determined in 60 patients admitted to Tropical Medicine department, Tanta university by ELISA technique. in addition 20 apparently healthy individuals matched in age as a control group.
