Abstract Intensive care unit is a high pressure environment due to the high acuity where nurses need to make accurate and appropriate decisions promptly in situations where there is a great degree of stress and uncertainty and when patients possess little physiologic reserve. Besides, the work in intensive care needs to make rapid decisions in high-risk and dynamic situations. Participation in decision-making is able to increase nurses’ empowerment, autonomy, willingness and commitment to work, and enable them to better understand their work challenges and ffectively solve problems that confront them in critical situation.When intensive care unit work environment provides nurses empowerment and decisional making involvement that enhance and support nurses problem solving ability. so, nurses need to be trusted, valued, challenged, stimulated, respected and have commitment to organizational mission especially when time for creative thinking, resources are available, new idea are supporting and innovation are fostered. Frequently experience the need for urgent decision makings about deteriorating patients, in such clinical environments; nurses feel the need for autonomy and problem solving skills to make clinical decision ona daily basis. |
