Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the effect of surface finish protocols
(glazing versus polishing) on the surface roughness, color stability and translucency of recently
developed cubic ultra-translucent zirconia.
Methodology: CAD/CAM fabricated zirconia cylinders were cut into disc-shaped samples of
uniform dimensions of 11mm diameter and 0.6mm thickness using an isomet device. Specimens were
then sintered in Wiessen Zirconia sintering furnace according to manufacturer instructions.
Disc samples were divided into two groups according to the surface finish protocols.Group1:
glazing surface finish. n=8.Group2: polishing surface finish. n=8.Surface roughen was assessed by a
non-contact profilometer. Color stability and translucency were assessed by spectrophotometer for
samples in both groups.
Results: overall comparison between both groups regarding the amount of surface roughness
percentage of change revealed (-0.7668±0.1789) and (-0.0825±0.0495) for glazing and polishing
respectively. Comparison between both groups regarding the amount of color stability (∆E) revealed
(1.56±0.35) and (5.67±0.74) for glazing and polishing respectively. A descriptive study was
performed on translucency on studied samples before and after glazing. Mean ± standard deviation
revealed (16.0553±2.659) and (15.3714±9.773) before and after glazing respectively. Performing an
independent t-test for significance estimation between both independent groups revealed that there
was a significant difference between both groups.
Conclusions: glazing of cubic ultra-translucent multi-layered zirconia is better than polished
surface finishing protocol regarding surface roughness, color stability and translucency.
