Abstract

Purpose -The purpose of this research is to empirically examine the relationship between
the learning organization and readiness for change, which is a globally trending topic.
Methodology-Learning organization construct was measured based on the seven
dimensions, from Watkins and Marsick model (1993, 1996, and 1999): The seven
dimensions are classified into three levels: individual, team, and organizational level.
Organizational readiness for change was measured on the basis of employees ’attitudes
toward change formed by cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitude.
The research was applied on one of the most prominently challenging sectors in Egypt,
namely: higher education sector. After reviewing the literature, the researcher conducted an
exploratory research in order to gain more insights about the study variables that affect the
Egyptian academic staff attitude towards change; afterwards, the research applied the
quantitative research approach, where data was collected from a sample of 310 academic
staff who work for different Egyptian private universities. Structural equation modelling has
been used to test the study hypotheses.
Findings-The results of the study indicated: first, the relevance of individual level
dimensions of the learning organization in the explanation of readiness for change. Second,
no statistically significant relationship was found between team level dimensions of the
learning organization and readiness for change. Third, no significant relationship was found
to exist between organizational level dimensions of the learning organization and readiness
for change.
Implications – The proposed study framework can be utilized by policy makers in the
ministry of higher education in reviewing universities practices and setting rules that will
support the implementation of successful change; that will help in supporting Egypt’s vision
2030 and sustainable development goals. In addition, study framework can be utilized by
human resource practitioners, to frame organizational practices to develop change
supportive workforce.
Originality and value - The study extends the previous research by investigating the role
of learning organization different levels in developing readiness for change.
