Abstract

Purpose: The aim of the study is to compare the effect of the reflexology and aerobic training on quality of life in essential hypertensive patients (140:160 mmHg systole, 90:100 mmHg diastole). Subjects and Methods: Forty hypertensive female patients were enrolled in this study, they were conducted at the outpatient clinic of Misr Petrolium Company, they ranged in age from 35 – 45 years with body mass index (BMI) between 30 – 34.9 kg/m2 and they were assigned randomly into two groups equal in number (A and B). group (A) included 20 hypertensive female patients who received medications and aerobic training in form of peddler training with moderate intensity while group (B) included 20 hypertensive female patients who received the same medications of group (A) and foot reflexology. The participated patients in this study were assessed by blood pressure, heart pulse rate, insomnia severity index (ISI) and short form 36 quality of life questionnaire (SF-36). They were evaluated before and after the treatment program about three sessions per week for eight weeks; the post assessment was applied after four weeks of treatment (post 1) and after eight weeks of treatment (post 2). Results: The obtained results revealed significant differences of the measured variable before and after treatment (after 4 weeks), (post 1) and (after 8 weeks), (post 2) in the two groups. Statistical significant difference was also found in post-treatment values (after 4 weeks) and (after 8 weeks) of the measured variable when compared between the two groups in favor of group (B) and the percentage of change after 8 weeks of treatment of systolic blood pressure in groups (A and B) were 12.06 % and 13.68 % respectively while of diastolic blood pressure in both groups were 7 % and 11.21 % respectively. Conclusion: Reflexology and aerobic training in form of peddler training can be added to the physical therapy program and reflexology was more effective than aerobic training in enhancing quality of life in hypertensive patients.
