Abstract There are too many retraction materials and techniques each has its pros and cons, so this study aims to compare between the ultrapack retraction cord and the magic foam paste regarding the amount of lateral and vertical retraction and patient comfort during their application. Methodology : 22 cases requiring full coverage PFM fixed prosthesis in the anterior esthetic zone were selected from the outpatient clinic of the fixed prosthodontics department – Cairo University. The teeth were prepared with subgingival deep chamfer finish line and were divided into 2 groups according to the method of retraction. group I : Patients having retraction with the retraction cord group II : Patients having retraction with the magic foam paste. In both groups the amount of lateral and vertical retraction were measured using the stereomicroscope and patient satisfaction was measured by Comley and Demeyer numeric pain scale. Results : There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding vertical retraction but there was a significant difference between them for the amount of lateral retraction where P<0.05 with the retraction cord giving more amount of dilation. For the amount of tissue recovery and patient satisfaction there was a significantdifference between both groups, with magic foam paste giving better results. Conclusion : Within the limitations of this study, both the retraction cord and the magic foam paste are an effective means of retraction as both gives the minimum amount of retraction needed both laterally and vertically, but the magic foam paste can be used in cases with shallow sulcus depth and equigingival or slightly subgingival margins otherwise retraction cord is recommended. |
