Abstract Breast cancer in women is a major public health problem throughout the world. It is the most common cancer among women both in developed and developing countries. survival is relatively good when these cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. Mammography has low sensitivity and specificity in women with radiographically dense breast. Sonography, either hand held or automated, is effective in detecting mammographically occult cancer in women with dense tissue. Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) is a technology in which ultrasound scanning is performed mechanically, eliminating the effect of operator dependence and reproducibility and promising new technology that might be useful for screening for breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue. from this study we can reach to: There is a near perfect agreement between ABUS and HHUS diagnostic performance (κ) 0.85,and statistically significant difference in time of examination in favor of ABUS as it is operator independent and provide large scanned area in every single sweep and also aided with computer software, but HHUS still have higher sensitivity than ABUS and that may be attributed to ABUS limitations to evaluate axillary lymph nodes and lack of Doppler, so ABUS may serve as an effective and adjunct tool to mammography and hand held Sonography. Conclusion: The auto-mated breast ultrasound shows comparable diagnostic performance when compared with HHUS and is a useful supplemental tool for mammography when screening for breast cancer in a large population. Better results can be attained by more training regarding imaging and interpretation. |
