Abstract Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) refers to mothers providing only breast milk for their infants without any other liquids or solids. There is evidence supporting the benefits of EBF for infants, children and mothers. Globally, no more than 35% of infants during their first four months of life are exclusively breastfed. Regarding Arabic world, Exclusive breastfeeding rates increased by 10% over the past decade especially in Syria and Egypt. The world health organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breast feeding for the first six months of life while it is advised to provide adequate and safe complementary foods with breast feeding for up to two years and beyond.. Exclusive breast feeding protected against serious morbidities in the first six months of life (Agho et al., 2019). Aim of the study: This study aimed to assess the factors influencing the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers having premature infants. Research question: What are the factors influencing the practice of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers having premature infants.? Research Design: The design that was utilized in this study is a descriptive research design. Summary 109 Settings: The current study was conducted at neonatal intensive care units (NICU) belonging University hospital in Cairo governorate. there are three university hospitals (Ain Shams University Hospitals Demerdash- cairo university hospitals of Alkasr Alain - Al-azher hospital). Subjects: 1. All mothers who attended postnatal clinic during 6 months and willing to participate at the study. Tools of data collection: Data was collected using Four tools : II. Questionnaire Sheet: It was designed by the researcher after reviewing the current and past related literature and it was reviewed by supervisors. It was written in an Arabic language to suit mothers language it include the following parts: Part 1: - It concerned with characteristics of mothers such as age, level of education, residence, employment status - As well as the characteristics of premature baby such as gestational age, chronological age, sex, sleep problem, frequency of crying….etc.‘ - It concerned with the obstetric health data of mothers as type of delivery, plan of pregnancy, complications during delivery, complications postpartum, parity, gravidity..etc. Summary 110 Part 2: It concerned with studied mother‘s knowledge about exclusive breast feeding time of starting breastfeeding, Prior experience with breastfeeding, Sore system : Based on mother response to question if mother answer was correct, mother consider know a score of (1) was given if mother answer was incorrect consider unknown score of (0) was given .The total score of knowledge reached 11 score represent 100%. The total knowledge was classified into two level, salisfactory when the score was > 60% and unsatisfactory when the score was< 60% (Appendix I). Part 3: It concerned with factors influencing the practice of exclusive breast feeding as perceived by the mothers. It was adopted from Favour, & Evbaguehita, 2021.It consisted of maternal and infant related factors (16) items, breast related factors (5) items, supportive structure related factors (9) and influence of traditional and social culture believes(2)items. The mothers responded to each item by yes or no.Yes meant that this factor influenced and No meant this factor did not influence. Tool II Modified Likert type like Attitude Rating Scale guided by La Mora A, Russell DW 1999 to assess the attitude of mothers towards exclusive breast feeding .The Scale consisted of 27statement (Appendix II). |
