Abstract

By use of some notions from Adler’s theory, this thesis aims to answer the following questions: To what extent can Osborne’s protagonists Jimmy Porter, Archie Rice, and Bill Maitland be considered emblematic representatives of such abnormal states as inferiority complex, neurotic aggression, distancing, and the lack of social interest? Are there any differences or similarities among those protagonists? To answer these questions, this thesis psychoanalyzes Osborne’s significant plays: Look Back in Anger (1956), The Entertainer (1957), and Inadmissible Evidence (1965) through an Adlerian perspective by employing concepts such as the inferiority complex, neurotic aggression, distancing, and the lack of social interest to John Osborne’s selected plays. This thesis concludes that John Osborne is so influenced by these Adlerian concepts that his protagonists appear as discernable representatives of all these neurotic states.
