Abstract

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic transmural inflammatory disease of
the gastrointestinal tract, usually occurring in younger patients, and
characterized by remitting and relapsing episodes. The initial diagnosis is
usually confirmed with barium exams and endoscopy with biopsy [Nosek
et al].
Cross-sectional imaging (sonography, CT or MRI) is generally reserved
for evaluating the complications of the disease, such as fistulas or
abscesses.
The major advantage of MRI and bowel wall ultrasound over other
techniques for detection of small bowel abnormalities is the visualization
of the complete small bowel and extramural disease manifestations
without the use of ionizing radiation [DiBaise et al].
