Abstract

The Objective of this study: was to evaluate and compare the
effectiveness of two different programs of pulsed electromagnetic field
therapy on post-herpetic neuralgia of the sciatic nerve.
Methods: Thirty patients with post-herpetic neuralgia, ranging in age
from 25 to 40 years, were randomly divided into two groups.
fifteen patient in in PEMFT group (A) received traditional physical
therapy plus program (1) of strong impulses, activating the South
polarity of magnetic pulses with frequency fluctuating between 12.5 and
50 Hz, with buttons 1,3 and 6 up and 2,4 and 5 down.
fifteen patient in in PEMFT group (B) received traditional physical
therapy plus program (2) of mild impulses, calming North polarity of the
magnetic pulses with frequency of 12.5Hz with buttons 1,2,4 and 5 down
while buttons 3 and 6 up was applied day after day for two months. In
both groups each program was applied for 20 Min ,day after day and for
two months. Visual analogue scale measurement and Carbamazepin
Intake estimation were done before treatment and two months after
treatment .
Results: AT the end of treatment , there were significant decrease in
(VAS) and (CMI) mean values with each group and also between groups
in favor of group (2).
Conclusion: Both PEMFT programs were effective in improving post –
herpatic neuralgia of sciatic nerve, in addition program (2) seemed to be
more beneficial than program (1)
