Abstract

The lack of water resources that coincide with population growth and pollution represents environmental damage that affects human health and organisms over time and finding many effective ways to reuse water at the lowest cost is the best solution for the continuation of life. The thesis aims to use the modified kaolin (from the Sinai Desert) to remove some pollutants from industrial wastewater. where the thesis was based on the first: Prepare a modified kaolin clay using sulfuric acid. The clay’s ingredients were analyzed before the modification and then modified by adding sulfuric acid to it, then heating it in a flask, and quenching the clay by adding cold, iced water, clearing the mixture, and washing with distilled water to remove any remaining acid, and then drying and grinding it. The modified clay was taken and analyzed by XRF to ascertain the ratio of (Al2O3/ SiO2) where it was found to increase by 1.38%. This indicates that the interstitial distances between the inner layers of the clay are increased to accommodate the greatest amount of ions within them. Second, the modified clay was tested in the removal of lead ions and zinc ions on two samples of distilled water added to it those substances respectively, and both XRF and filtered water were analyzed by Atomic absorption to show an increase in lead and zinc ions within the modified and their lack of filtration water. Third Industrial wastewater from the Pachin factory was measured before treatment by the factory. The indicators BOD5, COD & TSS, were found to be well above the law limits. The modified clay was tested on that water and its ratios were low. Fourth: External pollutants have been added to the industrial wastewater outside the Pachin paint plant and the modified clay is efficient in removing them. Fifth: The modified clay was recovered again from the remaining pollutants in two ways: by taking a sample of the contaminated modified clay, adding hydrochloric acid to it, and drying. Second Method: By adding acetone to a sample of the contaminated modified clay. The discussion of the results demonstrated the effectiveness of the modified kaolin in removing heavy element ions from water through an easy and low-cost process.
