The study analyzed eight standard identifiers for the publication industry, which are: International Standard Book Number, International Standard Book Number (Actionable), E-Book ID Number, Amazon Standard Identification Numbers, International eBook Identifier Number, International Standard Serial Number, Standard Address Number, Global Location Number, International Standard Name Identifier. The aims of the analysis are to explore the actual sitiuation of these identifiers by Egyptian publishers and to provide suggestions that would help in the suitable application of these identifiers. This study is an exploratory one as it relied on the descriptive method with its survey style. The study also relied on the following data collection tools: questionnaires, structured interviews, correspondence, reports and statistics, visiting the official websites of the bodies responsible for allocating standard identifiers abroad and visiting the official websites of publishers’ associations in Egypt and abroad. The results of this study also serve a wide range of parties involved in the publication industry, especially publishers; in addition, it contributes to raising awareness of the significance of applying the standard identifiers in the publication industry field.
The study reached to some results, most notably is the lack of the ingredients for the success of applying standard identifiers for the publishing industry in Egypt. The percentage of Egyptian publishers’ lack of awareness and knowledge of standard identifiers in the digital environment reached 94%, and the percentage of the desire of the Egyptian publication houses to apply standard identifiers in the digital environment reached 65%, and in contrast to the previous result, the percentage of the desire of the managers of the major publishing houses to implement standard identifiers in the digital environment reached 38%, and the percentage of the those who were unwilling to apply them reached 62%.
