Abstract

Hospital emergency departments are one of the foremost essential elements of the healthcare system. Triage is recognized as being one of the core requirements for the provision of
effective emergency care. South African Triage Scale is a model of triage is a well validated
and reliable tool has been widely implemented and evaluated in South Africa, it is simple,
easy to use and understand. The aim of this study is developing a proposed multidisciplinary
administrative system for patients triage at an emergency reception in Cairo University
hospital. A methodological design was utilized in this study. A convenience of (60)
emergency medical and nursing staff; consisted of: (13) medical staff; (14) medical interns;
and (33) nursing staff. This number was decreased to be 31 during training sessions;
consisted of: (13) medical staff and (18) nursing staff. in addition to system validation jury
(35) medical and nursing professors and health care team members’ experts to check the
validity of the proposed administrative system for patients’ triage. Data were collected
through; triage system assessment questionnaire, observation sheet, opinions poll of the
arbitrators on the content and validity of a proposal for an administrative system for patients’
triage in emergency reception, and knowledge questionnaire/practice sheet about patients’
triage. The current results revealed that, the majority of the respondents’ answers regarding
total components of the triage system reflected mean percent with (64.97) structure, (58.58)
process and (45) outcomes. Respondents’ knowledge scores showed a significant statistical
difference (χ2 = 33.739, P = 0.000) during training phases. Additionally, the highest
percentages (67.7%) of respondents’ perform the practice correctly after the training. Twothirds (60%) of the experts approved the proposed administrative system for patients’ triage
without modification and (40%) accepted it with modifications. The study concluded that, a
proposed administrative system for patients’ triage was developed by multidisciplinary
health care team members, validated and communicated to hospital managers. Effective
training of health care team members on the selected triage model was done. The study
recommends that, it is important to make the decision for implementation of the proposed
administrative system for patients’ triage at the emergency reception and follow-up to
monitor health care team compliance
