Abstract Purpose: The study purposedto compare between the effectsof ultra sound applications on trigger points versus on acupoints in patients with cervical myofascial pain syndrome . Patients and methods: Forty-five patients (8 males, 37 females); ranged from 20 to 40 years with mean age 25.8±5.2 years. All patients were complaining from neck pain for not less than 6 month , they were randomly allocated into threegroups A, B and C. Patients in group A received ultrasoundon 4 trigger points located in the upper cervical region inthe tops of the shoulders, 2 points along the shoulder blades and 2 in the area of hair line;patients in study group B received ultrasoundon acupoints (LU7- GB21-B10-GB20),while patients in group C (control) had sham ultrasound (the device was turned off)on (acupoints and trigger points). Continuesultrasoundwas applied for 40s on each point with 1MHZ,3cm probe diameter 0.8 watt/cm2. One shoot application of ultrasound was done in the 3 groups. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated with Visual Analog Scale for the assessment of pain intensity, algometry for the assessment of pressure pain threshold at trigger points , and inclinometer mobile for the assessment of range of motion at base line and 15min, 30 min and 60 min post treatment. Results: Within group comparison revealed that there was a statistical significant improvement of pain pressure threshold , neck flexion, neck right side bending in group A and only pain in group B , between group comparison revealed also a significant statistical difference in extension ,left side bending after 15 minutes, neck extension ,left side bending and right rotation after 30 minutes ,flexion ,extension ,right -left side bending ,right rotation and pain after 60 minutes. Conclusions: Ultrasound applied on trigger points yieldedbetter effects in increasing pain pressure thresholdatmyofascial trigger points, flexion and right side bending for cervical range of motion, while ultrasoundapplication on acupoints yielded better reduction of pain. |
