Abstract

Advantages of regional anesthesia include consciousness of the patient, early awareness of complications due to the on-going cooperation with the patient, protection of the airway reflexes, less thromboembolism and better hemodynamic stability compared to GA. This method is preferred by anesthetists, especially in patients suffering from respiratory system problems or high risk cardiac patients. It also provides solid analgesic effect by inhibiting nociceptive transmission from peripheral to central neuronal system, but their analgesic advantages might be limited by the short half life of current local anesthetics. The analgesic duration can be prolonged by increasing dose of local anesthetics; however the risk of accompanied systemic neurotoxicity can be increased
