Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is an organism of major medical importance, the ability of Staphylococcus aureus to develop resistance to antibiotics has resulted in the emergence of MRSA. MRSA has become a serious threat to hospitalized patients worldwide and it is now a challenge for public health. It has the ability to survive in medical devices and surfaces for months. Disinfectants play an important role in the control of nosocomial infections. Appearance of MRSA resistant to QACs and other disinfectant widely used in hospitals has been reported. In this present study, we aimed to detect the possible relationship between antibiotic and disinfectants by testing the susceptibility of S. aureus isolates to three disinfectants (Clorox, Ultrasol AF and Virusolve +) . This study was conducted over a period of six months from January till June 2015 on 50 Staphylococcus aureus isolates ( 25 MRSA and 25 MSSA) collected from Kasr El-Aini Hospital lab. These isolates were recovered from patients suffering from different infections: wound infection (68%) , chest infections(18%), BSI (10%) and UTI (4%). Antibiotic sensitivity test was done for all the isolates according to CLSI 2014 and the Results of testing showed that MSSA isolates were still susceptible to rifampin, linezolid, chloramphenicol and ciprofloxacin (100%), MRSA isolates were only highly susceptible to linezolid (88%) with lower variable sensitivity to other antibiotics
