Abstract

Nutritional support has become a routine part of care for critically ill patients. Enteral nutrition is considered as the preferred method of feeding among critically ill patients. It is safe, has better physiological impact, improves wound healing, and reduces mortality rates. However, it has several complications that have negative effect on patients’ nutritional status. So, critical care nurses should have up to date knowledge and practices regarding assessing and caring for critically ill patients{u2019} nutritional status. To assess nurses{u2019} knowledge and practices regarding nutritional status of critically ill patients receiving enteral nutrition at Minia university hospital. Research questions: Q1: What do critical care nurses’ know about nutritional status of critically ill patients receiving enteral nutrition at Minia university hospital? Q2: What are critical care nurses’ practices regarding nutritional status of critically ill patients receiving enteral nutrition at Minia University hospital? Research design: A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized in the current study. A convenience sample of 30 nurses was included in the current study. This study was carried out at the surgical and medical intensive care units of Minia university hospital. Tools of data collection: Two tools were developed by the researcher, and tested for clarity, and feasibility: a- Nutritional status assessment questionnaire; b- Nutritional status assessment observational checklist for critical care nurses. 100% of the studied sample had unsatisfactory knowledge and practices levels regarding nutritional status with means of 30.93 ± 9.56 and 56.366 ± 11.360 respectively
