Abstract

Introduction: Preterm labour is one of the major causes of infant morbidity andmortality. Currently a variety of pharmacological agents are available to treatthreatened preterm labour. This study was undertaken to compare the efficacy ofProgesterone and Ritodrine hydrochloride for suppression of preterm labour. Objectives: To compare the efficacy of Progesterone and Ritodrine with respect to: {uF0A7}Days of gestation gained by tocolysis. Method: After fulfilling Inclusion & Exclusion criteria a total of 100 patients wereincluded in the study. A detailed history regarding age, parity, obstetric history and Gynecological history, general physical examination and systemic examination was done. The patients were randomized into two groups using simple randomization technique and were either administered Progesterone or Ritodrine Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test. Results: prolongation of pregnancy up to 37 weeks was 16 cases (32%) in ritodrine group compared tp 8 cases(16%) in progesterone group. P value =0.05.while prolongation of pregnancy more than 48 hours was 34 cases (68%) in ritodrine group while in progesterone group was 20 cases(40%).P value=0.004* Conclusion: Vaginal Progesteroneis less effective when compared to I.V Ritodrine for suppression of acute preterm labour
