Abstract

The oral route of drug delivery is typically considered the preferred and the most patient-convenient means of drug administration. The popularity of oral route is attributed to patient acceptance, ease of administration, accurate dosing, cost effective manufacturing methods, as well as shelf-life stability of the product. There is a variety of dosage forms to be administered orally including tablets, capsules, liquid elixirs, syrups, oral powders and granules for reconstitution. Tablets are the most popular oral formulations available in the market and preferred by patients and physicians alike. Tablets have a number of advantages over other oral dosage forms as they enable an accurate dosage of medicament to be administered easily by patient, ease of preparation, compactness of dosage and improvement of shelf-life stability and economic cost for packaging, shipping and storage of the product. Tablets are among the most common oral solid dosage forms for drugs .The exact manufacturing process for solid dosage forms vary from compound to compound, as the properties of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) molecule plays a significant role in the development of an appropriate formulation.
