Abstract

The marine environment of the Red Sea coast of Yemen Republic is subjected to contamination by pollutants, mainly heavy metals, from untreated domestic, industrial and agricultural wastewater, in addition to run-off during rainy seasons, ship and shipment activities, oil transportation, oil spillage and atmospheric fallout. The present study assesses the impacts of environmental toxic metals in their complex state on two common marine fish species; Pomadasys hasta and Lutjanus russellii collected from a reference site (site 1) in comparison to two polluted sites (2 and 3) along the Red Sea coast of Hodeida governorate, Yemen Republic. Concentrations of heavy metals in water, sediments and vital organs of both studied fish species were detected. Moreover, the contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI) as well as the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) and metal pollution index (MPI) of the selected heavy metals in sediments and fish tissues were calculated. The hazard index (HI) was also calculated as an indicator of human health risks associated with fish consumption. Comparable data are presented concerning the fish growth indices and blood biochemical parameters as well as histopathological changes in gills, liver and kidney of both fish species as general biomarkers of the fish health status.
