المستخلص

This study aims at studying the allelopathic potential of Rhazya stricta on Raphanus sativus and Lycopersicon esculentum using laboratory bioassay and greenhouse pot experiment. In laboratory bioassay, aqueous extract of Rhazya showed inhibitory effect on seed germination and seedling growth particularly at the high concentrations. The germination percentages and seedling growth of R. sativus was not significantly affected, while significant inhibition occurred in L. esculentum. In the greenhouse pot experiment, the growth of R. sativus inhibited by Rhazya residue at the late growth stage, while with L. esculentum the residue of Rhazya stimulated the plant growth at different ages. The present findings indicate that the biochemical interference of Rhazya allelochemicals can only be effective if they are found in high concentration, while the low concentration has no harmful effect or even stimulate the plant growth. The allelopathic effect of Rhazya affected the chemical composition and pigment content as well as the molecular characters of the two study species. One may conclude that the allelopathic activity of Rhazya stricta is depending on the amount and type of allelochemicals released from the decomposed shoot, as well as the uptake of these compounds by plant roots of the target species
