Abstract

Water characteristics and growth of E. crassipes in the four Nile Delta lakes (Manzala, Brollous, Edko and King Marout) were studied among two successive years (from May 2011 {u2013} Marsh 3013). Plant growth parameters (density, height, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, protein, leaf area index and chlorophyll contents) were highly correlated to temperature, potassium and eutrophication level rather than hydrogen ion concentration and heavy metal concentration in the surrounding water habitats. The annual temperature cycle provide optimal plant growth and high metabolic activities during warm seasons (spring, summer and autumn), while these climatic conditions does not support plant growth during cold winter season. Water hyacinth plant showed variable dry matter allocation as well as variable heavy metal allocation to different organs among the year which indicate the high plant ability to survive under wide range of different environmental stresses. The plant showed high ability to reduce eutrophic pollutants (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia and phosphorous) of water as well as, removal of toxic heavy metals from water table. Bioaccumulation factors of heavy metals inside plant showed 836, 1040, 1840, 15, 574 and 474 for Zn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni and Pb respectively, translocation factor showed promising values (less than one) for all studied heavy metals
