Abstract

Fortunella margarita (Lour.) Swingle It is a close relative to citrus species. This thesis aimed to the discovery of therapeutic agents derived from Fortunella margarita (Lour.) Swingle Family Rutaceae by carrying out an applied pharmacognostical study including extraction, isolation and identification of the biologically active constituents. We are looking to reach safe and effective therapeutic agents from botanical origin which can be useful in drug industry. Volatile oils of leaves and fruits resulted in mean percentage of three replicates of 0.27 and 0.30 % respectively. The oils of both organs were analyzed by GC/MS revealed the presence of twenty compounds in the leaves representing 86.96% of the total leaves oil, from which the major compound was eudesmol (36.66%). The oil of the fruits were found to contain fourteen compounds representing 77.77% of the total fruits oil, terpineol (55.47%) represented the major compound. GLC analysis of the unsaponifiable matter of leaves and fruits revealed the identification twenty three and eighteen components, representing (76.66%) and (56.25%) respectively of the total unsaponifiable content. GC/MS analysis of the fatty acid methyl esters revealed the identification of ten and six compounds represented (58.82%) and (66.67%) respectively of the total composition
