Abstract

Summary
Recently, there is dramatic increase in using of testosterone propionate with serious side effects on human health. This study was performed to evaluate cardiovascular and endocrinal system ofathletes on low and high dose of anabolic steroids.
The use of testosterone propionate showed a significant increase in total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides but showed reducing in serum HDL levels rather than control group. These effects on lipid profile more prominent with high dose of testosterone propionate more than low dose.
According AS effect on blood pressure, the study showed a significant elevation of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure during day andnight. Also, these effects on 24 hours blood pressure more prominent in higher doses of testosterone propionate rather than small dose.
Anabolic steroid effect also on endocrine system. The use of AS (high dose and low dose) showed elevation in HbA1c compared to the control group . This study confirms diabetogenic effect of anabolic steroids.
Testosterone propionate reduce the level of LH and FSH in blood. That may explain their reducing effect on testicular volume specially on left sided testes.
By echocardiography and electro cardio graph, the study showed the significant decreasing in both systolic and diastolic function of the heart, and increasing heart rate during rest.
Echocardiography also showed significant increase in both left ventricular mass and left ventricular mass index in abuser of Testosterone propionate (high and low doses) compared to control group.
All of these side effect confirm that abusing of testosterone propionate not only have adverse effect but also have life-threatening effect on heart, testes and pituitary.
