Abstract

In this study, CBCT was used to assess the transportation of the canals and centering abilities of the Hyflex EDM, SmartTrack X3, and ProTaper Next Ni-Ti file systems in curved root canals.
Mandibular extracted human molars with a moderate to severe angle of curvature are categorized as having a curvature greater than 25 degrees by Schneider’s method. Twenty-seven of these canals were prepared to utilize the rotating techniques previously discussed, grouped into three groups of nine canals each.
Samples were mounted into a customized rectangular shaped mold made from self-cure acrylic resin.
The mounted specimens were scanned using cone beam device for comparison these images to those after canal preparation images.
The canals were prepared using the endodontic motor-driven device in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
The samples were rescanned after instrumentation to acquire the post-instrumentation images for comparison. Using OnDemand 3D CBCT analysis software, the images were evaluated to evaluate canal transportation and centering capabilities at three different levels of the root canal length, 3, 6, and 9mm from the apex.
The resulted data were statistically analyzed and showed a statistically insignificant difference between the three systems where Hyflex EDM, SmartTrack X3 and ProTaper resulted in nearly the same canal transportation at 3 mm, 6 mm and 9 mm from the apex.
Concerning the Centering Ability Hyflex EDM, SmartTrack X3 and PTN showed statistically insignificant difference at 3mm, 6 mm and 9 mm.
