Abstract

ENGLISH SUMMARY
This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of grape seeds extract in the form of
mouthwash in preventing the developing of new carious lesions in high caries risk young Egyptian
adults.
66 high caries risk dental students were recruited in the study with ages range from (18-25).
Participants DMFT scores and cariogram scores were recorded at baseline, then all active carious
lesions and defective restorations were treated and restored with resin composite. Participants were
randomly divided into 3 groups according to the caries preventive protocol that they will follow for
1 year. Group1 (brushing twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste + interdental cleaning with dental
floss once a day + grape seeds extract mouthwash twice a day for five days every month), group2
(brushing twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste + interdental cleaning with dental floss once a day
+ chlorhexidine-fluoride mouthwash twice a day for five days every month) and group3 (brushing
twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste + interdental cleaning with dental floss once a day).
Participants were recalled for follow up sessions at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months for examination and to
detect any new carious lesions that might develop. The incidence of new lesions was calculated by
visual inspection for the presence of any new lesion during the follow up sessions or not (yes or no)
and the change in the active lesions number (∆ Active lesions) after 1 year
